Day 17

5/28/22

This was a big day for Gus! It was full of new smells, sounds and experiences. Being up at the cabin with family, a 14-year-old pit bull "cousin" and a very long walk have our young man all tuckered out!

Oh, the smells and sights! We saw deer, foxes, a porcupine and a host of area dogs during the day. Who knows what other aromas entertained this pup as we walked out to a nearby point on the lake! He was in "Sniff Heaven"!

I have been assessing the possibility of Gus being a successful Therapy Dog for some time. There are days when I get a bit disheartened, but try to focus on his good points. Today, I became a true believer in this boy's golden heart.

We had walked about a mile when we came upon the nicest couple doing yard work by the road. The woman immediately asked if she could meet Gus and shared a recent loss of their sweet lab. She squatted down in front of Gussie and asked me if she could get a hug from him. I replied that he's still a crazy puppy, but she was welcome to try. To my amazement, she slowly lifted one paw over her shoulder and then the other. I was humbled beyond belief whe Gus seemed to pull her in and laid his head on her shoulder. This lasted for quite some time before he gently pushed back to look at her. She had tears in her eyes and asked us to please return for another visit.

Stunned at the encounter, I began to think of the times I had doubted this pup and his ability to offer love. Perhaps I have underestimated others in my world...even myself.

Our Gus will eventually be a Therapy Dog! Maybe he will be the best one ever! I think it's time to embrace the possibilities in everyone I meet. I know Gus will be the first one to have me as a cheerleader!
