Day 166
10/27/22
One of our favorite things to do, when out Therapy Dogging, is reading with children! Today, Ranger was able to do just that!
When we arrived at the elementary school, I opened the hatch and our Big Guy stood up, stretched and looked around. The pups always check to see which venue we are at for the day. When he realized we were going into the school, he perked right up and jumped down with his nose headed toward the front entrance.
We checked in at security and stopped by to greet the secretary and office staff. Ranger jumped right up with his paws at the window to the great amusement of everyone in the office. Wherever this pup goes, people melt.
Heading down the hallway, he needed no directions. Turn here, take a left, stop to greet a child in the hallway and down towards the first grade rooms. Ranger knew right where we would set up shop, so he headed to our little nook under the stairs and looked up at me with anticipation.
Our first reader appeared and we began with introductions, a Ranger Trading Card and a time for a few snuggles. Then our young friend settled in to read to his audience. I am basically invisible, so the kids direct everything towards the dogs.
One of the readers today plopped down on the bench, after greeting Ranger, and announced that we would be reading the book as a play. I was to read the parts of all adults and he would handle the rest. When he decided that I was capable of reading my parts, we began. He was a delight and thanked us for our time. I was completely charmed and in awe of his literacy skills, self- confidence and personality!
The last child to share a book met Ranger and sat down with a Dr. Seuss book. He informed me that he only knew the sight words, but he was working on the rest. English might have been his second language...but not for long! He knew EVERY sight word in the book and eagerly listened as I shared a few strategies for sounding out other words. I was impressed!
These children are so eager and willing to learn. I have never shared a book with one of these young readers where they seemed bored or frustrated. Their minds are like sponges seeking water.
I sometimes joke about the vast number of "files" in my brain...wanting to delete a few that no longer serve any use. When I see these youngsters, with their zest for learning, I know their brains are hungry for knowledge. I am also aware that they are excited about everything to do with learning. What a wonderful way to approach new concepts. I am going to try not to worry about those bulky, unused files in my brain and embrace new learning with gusto!
As for my little friend who knew only sight words, he surprised me as he made his exit. Before he left, he announced that he wanted to be President of the United States one day. He listed off a few of the more current office holders and then asked me who my favorite President might be. My answer..."I think my favorite President will be you! You already have my vote!" I would not be surprised if he achieved that dream!!!
