Day 127
9/18/22
Here are Gus and Sam comforting each other and sharing a moment of quiet. Since they discovered that they could play with our permission and watchful eyes, they have become good buddies.
As I watched them play hard and then relax together under the dining room table, I understood why they were snuggled together. They have already started to form a bond and find comfort in being close.
Comfort comes in an array of packages. This evening, we had our dear, beloved friends over for "comfort food." They had experienced a sadness and I decided homemade oatmeal bread and chicken pot pie might make their day a little brighter. The brownies and apple crisp probably helped a bit as well.
Blankets, tea/coffee, hugs, cards, phone calls, sunsets, and so many other experiences can offer comfort. They warm the heart and offer a feeling of connectiveness and safety. There are those comforts that you can give to others and some that simply comfort yourself.
When I am out with my Therapy Dogs, the comfort they offer is palpable. The smiles, tears, dog hugs and stories shared are a testament to the gift these Goldens offer. They have no thoughts of reward...they only open their hearts to others without one selfish motive.
We all need comfort from time to time. I know that my pups sooth my heart when I am sad or anxious. A few years ago, I set a goal to make three people's lives a little better each day. (Sometimes, my Therapy Dogs would be part of the daily "Paying it Forward." I almost felt like that was cheating!) I would record those kindnesses in a journal along with three things I was grateful for. Along the way, it simply became a wonderful habit. Currently, I just write that goal in my heart instead of on paper. I realize that I get as much, if not more, happiness by offering a kindness than the recipient might in receiving it.
I think I will go get a little comfort from my pups now. Not that I need it for anything in particular, but THEY are my comfort food. I even love them more than popcorn...and if you know me, that's infinite!
