Day 12

5/23/22

We took Gus to the veterinarian today for a blood test as we get ready to have him neutered next month. In an attempt to let his growth plates mature, we have waited until he is approaching his first birthday. Believe me, it's time for this surgery!!!

I was watchful as our boy entered the waiting room and began to sniff around. At first, he was just his "zoomy" self! After a moment, I could see him look more uneasy as he must have smelled scents which were less than enjoyable. He came over and sat in front of me with a slight look of fear on his face (You can see it in the picture.). Poor baby! We reassured him, the tech took him back and soon he reappeared with a look of joy and relief! We hadn't left him!

It made me think of my last book, "Becoming Brave", where the main characters face many fears. As Gus (Yes, our Gus) and Ollie embrace their uncertainties, they learn that fear can be a friend as it wraps its arms around them to keep them safe from harm.

Fear as a friend? I believe you should always listen to that little voice in your head or heart when it urges you to stop and evaluate the situation. It knows what it is talking about! There is always a reason to assess the situation when the adrenaline starts pumping. That's just Fear keeping you safe.

Today, Gus was only reacting to his own unknowns and came to us for comfort. I couldn't help but see it as an illustration of people reaching out to friends when they feel uneasy about a situation. What a gift that connection is to give and receive!

Gus will weather this storm and we will be there, with the "Cone of Shame", to reassure, guide and love him. Hopefully, this life episode with help him in "becoming brave". I'll let you know how it goes!
