Day 1059

One of my favorite things to do is bring the dogs to elementary schools. The children are enthralled and the dogs love the attention. Ranger, in particular, adores all the scratches and hugs!

Being the center of attention has never been “my thing.” I am happiest when I can help coordinate or create a wonderful moment. When people offer their thanks and appreciation, it has taken me a long time to accept those accolades gracefully. Being humble (I believe we were encouraged to be graciously inconspicuous) was a roadblock to a simple “Thank you” when a compliment flowed my way.

As the years went by, I realized a ‘truth.’ When I offered someone a compliment and they deflected it, I felt uncomfortable. Over time, I learned how to follow up on an unwelcome compliment with “I am simply stating a fact! I truly mean these words!” People then seem to be more open and accepting.

So now, I gratefully and gracefully receive compliments in the spirit with which they are offered. I would never want anyone to feel badly on my account! As for Ranger, and the rest of the Golden Halo, they welcome ANY kind words…as long as there is a scratch behind the ears to accompany them!
