Day 1044

Dogs absolutely live in the moment! That was my thought in the middle of the night. I was unable to sleep, so my mind began its nightly meanderings. Tomorrow, I would follow in their inspiring pawprints.

Heading out on my first walk with Sam, I decided to follow his lead. Everything he did, I tried to imitate. He looked up, I looked up in the same direction. He sniffed, I sniffed the air. When he stopped to bark, I waved at the neighbor. The problem was…

Sam:

*There’s a bird!

*What’s that smell? That neighbor dog stopped by!

*There are people in that yard! I should go to them!

Me:

*Sam is looking at a bird.

The geese are migrating! The robins have returned! I should probably fill the bird feeders!

*It smells like rain! I love that smell! When I get the birdseed, I should grab a spring candle.

*Oh! It’s so good to see neighbors outside!!! I will just give them a quick wave! There are three kids graduating this year! I should ask how I can help with their parties!

One minute had passed and I had failed miserably! Try as I might, I could find little success with keeping my mind in the moment. When I walked Gus and Ranger, I didn’t stand a chance. It was better during my slow walk with Miss Lilly, but I just couldn’t stay present and declutter my wandering mind.

In the final analysis, it dawned on me that sitting with my Goldens is one of the only times I can ALMOST live in the moment. Petting that angel hair and looking into their eyes commands my full attention! As they offer love in return, they are all in! I, on the other paw, am a work in progress as my mind eventually wanders to the next item on my waiting “To-Do” List!
