Day 1037

Our Gus went to Mercy today! When I was preparing to go (gathering all of the badges, lanyard, leash, etc.), both Ranger and Gus became very animated! After grooming Ranger for about 10 minutes, I knew there was not enough time to make him shine so I turned to Gus. I realized our three-year-old was already looking handsome and brushed, so the collar was placed around his neck. Poor Ranger knew he was being left behind and was pretty sad… nothing a few dog treats couldn’t cure!

Gus was a hit! There is something about his face that melts the heart. One nurse said, “You have no idea what this does for me! The dogs are always the best part of my day!” After we went our separate ways, the nurse found us two more times for some extra love!

Watching, from my end of the leash, I tried to discern what patients, staff and visitors were “getting” from the interaction. Stroking his fur, looking into his eyes and letting him interact with sniffs and kisses seemed to calm every single person. These Goldens are a joy to watch as they touch lives.

We encountered people who were sad, scared, nervous, anxious and any other emotion that needed some soothing. Being able to witness Gus minister to them was amazing. Tense shoulders relaxed, smiles replaced frowns, worried eyes turned into loving glances… he made a difference.

Here’s to making a difference in this world! Although humans can’t compete with our four-legged friends, we can still offer a hand or a shoulder to cry on. We can look people in the eyes and let them know someone cares. We can also listen to their fears and help them realize they are not alone. I, for one, try to be more like my Goldens every day.
