Day 947
What is it about sweets that captures the attention of a vast majority of living beings? My own Nanny would joke with us at 93 and say, “I have one tooth left in my mouth and it just happens to be my sweet tooth!” She was a character!
My dear Nanny was all about food and love! There were ALWAYS fresh sugar cookies on a cookie sheet in her kitchen! If we would prefer, we could have a large slice of frozen cookie dough from the freezer…or both!
She made amazing desserts and was known to say, “You can always save a mediocre meal with a great dessert!” She was right! Even though her meals were always incredible, her cakes, pies and cobblers were out of this world!
I can still remember the smell of her house and it warms my heart. A mixture of coffee and “something” baking in the oven greeted all who entered. It was my save haven.
There is abundant research pertaining to sweets activating the pleasure receptors in your brain, but I believe it is more than the taste. I would add in a dose of memories…goodies made with loving hands that soothed our anxiety and emitted an ambiance of safety and calm.
I am not sure that sweets offer the Goldens that safe, loving feeling, but they certainly love them! I guess I will go throw some cookies in the oven just in case someone, two-legged or four-legged needs a bit of sunshine!
