Day 936
On this balmy December day, I decided to mix up the Golden walks a bit. Walk #3 found the two ladies of the house setting off for a jaunt. Because Lilly and Ranger have always been such a bonded pair, they are rarely separated. Today was an exception.
Sammy’s walk is all about training. When Ranger figured out that Gus was a bit speedier than his sister, our elder statesman kept up in fine form and seemed to enjoy the faster walk . That left Miss Lilly to accompany me at her own pace.
As we sauntered around the neighborhood, I realized how animated and inquisitive Lilly was. Balancing two senior dogs together on a typical walk, can have its share of challenges. I juggle two leashes, treats, gloves, bags, etc. with a concerted effort. With only Lilly, I could focus on her overall being… it was a piece of cake!
Mental health and physical agility were noted, but it was her essence that I enjoyed! Watching the sniffs, sidetracks and interest points were all amazing. I realized that I watch the Goldens on their walks without “seeing” them as individuals with motives, interests and unique habits. Today’s walk with Lilly pointed that out!
On a human level, there are lessons to be learned. How many times do I lump individuals together only to be shocked when one or two show strong signs of being “outliers”? Admittedly, this happens early-on in the meeting phase, but I need to work at seeing each one for their individuality. It takes time to really get to know others on a personal level… the danger is to eventually lump them all together again once you get used to the group.
Much like my time today with Lilly, perhaps I need to “take time” to value others as individuals… and then remember them as a single entity instead of part of a group.
