Day 887
This morning, I had someone ask me how I got started on my path to Goldens and Therapy Dog work. This lady is close to my heart and has a love for Goldens as well.
Back in 2005, a neighbor at our cabin announced that she had golden retriever puppies for sale. At that time, we were a collie family, but I decided to head over to get a "puppy fix." I distinctly remember walking in and seeing six precious lumps of fluff and knowing there was no turning back. Arthur Angus soon found his way into our home and hearts!
After adding Arthur to our mix of collies, the years seemed to fly by. All of a sudden, I was retired from my day job and our sweet Golden Boy was six! One day, visiting a friend at Mercy, I ran into a Therapy Dog team. I immediately knew that was my destiny. Watching that sweet dog make the world a better place... one person at a time...left me speechless and convinced Arthur would be a great Therapy Dog! After asking numerous questions, we headed to training with our boy. 32 weeks later (Obedience 1, Obedience 2, Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog International class), we had an official Therapy Dog. As our beloved Arthur aged, we added Lilly and Ranger...then Gus and Sam.
My life has been enriched beyond measure at the other end of the leash as I have watched the magic made by these amazing dogs. Just yesterday, Gus was at an "end-of-life" visit. Since he is rather new to the game, I was unsure of his reaction. When we approached the bed, Gus went right up to her and laid his head on the bed by her hand. When she felt the movement, she reached over and stroked his warm head for the longest time. He stood there and simply looked into her eyes. He simply knew. Good boy, Gus.
They have all been amazing, beloved and gifts to the world. I still miss my Arthur more than words can express, but our memories remain in my heart forever. I wouldn't change a single step on the journey to working with Therapy Dogs. They enrich my life every time we walk through a door.
