Day 845

The eyes are Golden. This has not always been the case for me. Way back in the day, when my first dog Molly joined our home, she was loved as much as a dog could be adored. A large sheltie, she was my first child and I miss her still. However, I don't recall looking into her brown eyes to see the depths that were within her.

As other beloved dogs joined our family, each one became a bit more "human" and their eyes drew me in. Today, with my four Goldens, their eyes are a window to their heart and soul. They touch me in a way that keeps growing over time. I see the love, devotion and connectedness like never before.

Humans have that same affect on me as life's journey flows on. When I allow myself the gift and privilege of looking deeply into another's eyes, they tell me so much more than I ever expected.

The eyes of the seniors we visit are the easiest to read. As they visit, the actual texture of their eyes seems to shift and change. From excitement at seeing one of the pups morphing into a walk down memory lane, their eyes allow me to see the depth of how their stories affected them. Often, there is a wistfulness or sadness, but they also become illuminated when their memories shift to loved ones and happier times.

The hospital is also an "easy read" when looking into someone's eyes. If I allow myself even a few seconds to concentrate on the feelings portrayed as we visit, I see deeply into their fears or hopefulness. With patients and staff, it allows me to react and offer what they need most...a listening ear that can be empathetic to their moment in time.

Loved ones and dear friends provide the most direct line from their eyes to what lies deep within. Feeling safe, their vulnerability is forgotten and their eyes show their truths. It is always an honor to be the recipient of those moments.

Taking the time to look deeply into the eyes right in front of you can change someone's day (or life). Never be afraid to go beyond the basics of eye contact and look a bit deeper. You won't be disappointed...I never am.
