Day 759

Devotion...

Today, Mac and I went to the "Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration Event" at the Mall of America. I was humbled, grateful and tearful as I watched veterans search the Traveling Vietnam Wall for names of their friends who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Watching as these soldiers searched for those special names, touching them with sometimes shaky fingers and wiping a tear from their eyes, my heart ached for all of them. Whether engraved on The Wall or standing in front of it to honor their comrades, I was looking at heroes. Many had visible reminders while others held their pain within, but all stood tall and proud as they were honored and welcomed home.

We experience devotion every day and, sometimes, might even take it for granted. On our return to The Big White House, our Goldens were beside themselves. Straining to get close to us and crying like we had been gone for weeks, the pups showed devotion without any words needed. Sam kept placing his big head in my hand insisting that I acknowledge his love. I, for one, need to be more aware of the devotion surrounding me and acknowledging what a gift it is!

We are devoted to spouses, children, friends, pets and so much more. In return, we are rewarded with love and acceptance. Because of that devotion, we are spurred on to support loved ones by fulfilling their needs...what a beautiful circle of love.

For those at the Celebration today, their devotion was directed at unknown faces, their country and eventually those buddies who served beside them. Even though they spent years being misunderstood and berated, their acceptance today brought many smiles and handshakes and a pride in knowing they served their country. It was a beautiful sight to behold.

To all Vietnam Veterans...thank you for your devotion to our country and "Welcome Home!"
