Day 646
This girl is tired! She gave her emotional and physical "all" today and is taking a well-deserved snooze. She truly is an amazing Therapy Dog.
We started with an "end-of-life" visit. Since we knew the family, it was an honor to be there...it always is. Lilly seems to know what was going on and began with "Mama" who was in her bed. Nuzzling her hand, she didn't want to give up when there was little response. She was rewarded with this lovely lady opening her eyes and looking right at our girl. After that moment, she moved over to the daughter who displayed so much strength and love...it was beautiful. The love in that room was palpable. Before we left, she asked me to hold her necklace. Pushing a button, I could feel a recording of her Mama's heart beating. Tears...
On to a senior friend who has been ill for over two weeks. We have dropped off a couple care packages, but today we masked and went in with a fresh bag of cookies. This friend has decided we are family and said to me through his tears...
"You are my sister. If you ever needed anything, I would try to give it to you. A lung, a kidney...anything. They might be a tad old, but they are yours if you need them." Tears...
As I wiped my eyes, Lilly moved right in and loved him up one side and down the other. I was so very humbled as he spoke and knew he meant every word. What a lovely human. We finally took our leave, but promised to be back at a moment's notice.
More visits with less raw emotions followed, but they were each wonderful in their own way. As we slowly walked home, I looked at my girl and marveled at her empathy and love for the people we meet. Stopping on the sidewalk, I pulled her face up to look into my eyes and thanked her...thanked her from the bottom of my heart. I told her she makes a difference in this world and my appreciation is endless for her. I added that having her by my side means more than she will ever understand, but her beautiful soul is treasured by so many...especially me. She looked me right in the eyes while I talked to her as if she understood. If any dog could...it's my Lilly
