Day 584
Today, we tried something new with our youngest boy. Instead of taking a solo walk this afternoon, we added Ranger into the mix. Since Jimmy is home for the holidays, we each took a dog and the difference in behavior was remarkable. Sammy is often EXCITED when another dog is in view, but this afternoon, he seemed to look to his big brother for guidance. Ranger pays no attention to other dogs, so Sam decided he didn't need to be concerned either! It was amazing!
We have all had mentors in our lives who have guided the path of destiny for us. Whether it is a teacher, colleague, family member or other respected individual, the lessons learned can often be life-altering. It has been my good fortune to have had a few life guardians who have helped light my way. Sometimes, simply being in their presence sparks a new dream, but often their support and teachings resonate within to make a change in course.
My father's best friend became one of my mentors after my dad passed. Among a myriad of other positions, Bob Johnson was a County Attorney, board member for many groups, advisor to governors and presidents and one of my two beloved second dads. When I needed advice, a listening ear or guidance, this was where my heart led me. He was always there for everyone, but made each of us feel like we were the special one in his life. What a blessing to have this giant of a man walk me down the aisle to marry Mac all those wonderful years ago. His lessons still live in my heart.
My other second dad was the father of my best childhood friend. Maynard was also large in stature, but such a gentle giant. His craggy face and gruff manner frightened me as a child, but those layers of fear disintegrated as I matured and realized the goodness and light he possessed. He taught me patience and humility on so many levels. After giving his eulogy, I discovered that his term of endearment for me, 'Doll', was for me alone. I still try to live up to the person he thought I could be.
We all have those mentors in our lives who care and want to see us succeed. In this selfless act, their guidance has no hidden agenda and only noble, generous wishes for our success. What a wonderful gift that is!
As for Sam, whether he realizes it or not, Ranger just guided him on a path to be more confident and brave. Thank you, Ranger! Our big guy turned out to be a wonderful mentor for Sam today. That is not a lesson our pup could have learned from someone walking on two legs!
