Day 574
A friend just sent me a message about dogs...
"When I look into the eyes of a Golden Retriever,
I do not see a dog.
I see a friend.
I see a soul."
What is it about eyes? When I meet a person, or dog, I first react to their eyes. Are they kind? Are they scared? Are they welcoming? The list could go on and on. The message here is that the eyes tell so much. When I look into someone's eyes (including dogs), I take in so much information about what is going on with their being at that moment.
There have been times when an adult will walk up to me and exclaim that I was their first grade teacher! The next question is invariably, "Do you remember me?" I look into their eyes and see the child they once were. Often, that brings their name to my mind...there is always a hug involved whether I remember or not!
While Therapy Dogging, I always look into people's eyes. Some are in pain, some are confused, some are frightened...but all are welcoming and grateful when they see the dogs. Usually, I get to witness the change from, whatever is going on in their lives to "There is a big dog here to see me!" This is one of the many times I feel so lucky to be at the other end of the leash!
As you head into family gatherings, work-related parties, neighborhood events and simply out-and-about, try to look at the eyes of your friends, wait staff, checkout clerks and family. You will see much deeper than their smiles. Connecting with those people might just be the highlight of their day! Just remember, they are looking back into your eyes as well.
