Day 570

We had the privilege and delight of attending a Christmas show this evening. The entire cast was made up of people with disabilities who meet on a weekly basis from many churches in the area. The enthusiasm, joy and pride displayed on stage was beyond amazing!

The pastor, a friend and neighbor, said something profound during the introduction. He thanked us all for being there and pointed out that everyone was so excited to perform for the audience and entertain everyone. Adding the most important words..."In a community of people who often need to be on the receiving end of life, it was so important for all the cast to be able to "give" something back." My heart melted.

There are so many groups who are not often in a position to offer their assistance or support to others. Seniors, some people with disabilities, animals, small children...the list could go on and on when thinking of those who "need" others. Watching those actors tonight, I changed my mind about that concept.

Even though my Goldens "need" us to get their food, exercise and medical issues addressed, what they "give" back is immeasurable.

Seniors "need" us for company, transportation and so much more as they age, but what they "give" back cannot be put into words.

Our children "need" us for just about everything from holding our hands to cross the street to supplying them with food, clothing, shelter and safety. What they "give" back almost brings me to tears.

The people on the stage tonight might have had an issue with mobility, words, control or deep understanding, but what they gave the audience tonight left us all humbled. The joy they exuded and the effort to make the show a success was a true gift to all who were lucky enough to be sitting in those pews.

There is sometimes a blurry line between "giving" and "needing." When we are able to "give" to others in "need," the giver often ends up as the true winner. Our hearts grow, our empathy is expanded and we realize that "giving" of ourselves brings true happiness to our souls.

So, thank you to the cast tonight!

Thank you to all of the beloved senior citizens!

A huge thank you to the children!

Finally, thanks to our amazing animals.

Anytime you "give," it makes the world a better place...kinder, more gentle and hopeful. During the season of "giving," don't hesitate to share your heart. It will come right back at you in the form of love.
