Day 54
7/5/22
This boy is TIRED! There were a number of city 4th of July Celebrations last night, which we weathered quite well, but then there were some independent revelers who enjoyed extending the noise until almost two in the morning! I hope they ran out of fireworks and we can all sleep tonight!
We have certainly had our share of sleepless nights with our pups. When they don't feel well, we always set up shop in the living room and spend the night on guard duty. Fireworks or thunderstorms find us with all the lights on, fans on, music blasting and Mom and Dad in the midst of panting goldens. Quite the picture!
Sweet Arthur used to jump up on the bed minutes prior to the arrival of a storm, and begin to burrow under Mac's pillow. We would wake up to Mac levitating upwards while I would usually try to get all 110 pounds of golden out from under him! Once again, quite the picture!
When the pups were about six months old, we had them spayed and neutered. I had the brilliant idea to schedule the procedures at the same time as Arthur's ACL surgery. Why not have a puppy sick ward and nurse them all back to health together? They arrived home with "The Cones of Shame," and we gently squired them into the living room/recovery area. To our horror, they all began to lick each other's wounds!!! It was horrible!
Of course, we have had various mishaps with our dogs surfing the counter and absconding with a morsel or two. Oreo wins the honor of eating something that scared us to pieces. First, she ate an ENTIRE 9 X 13 pan of lasagna (Thank you Mac for sitting up all night in the bathroom with the poor thing!) and then she ate an entire bottle of Rimidyl (for arthritis) and we all flew into panic mode!
Calling Pet Poison Control found us reeling from the message that "There isn't time to get to an emergency vet! Give her hydrogen peroxide right away!" We didn't have any on hand that day...now we have a bottle on every floor of the house!
Daughter Katie and I hopped into the car and headed to CVS at the speed of light. Running into the store, we called out, "WE NEED HYDROGEN PEROXIDE!" to the startled cashier. To their credit, there were about three employees who ran to the back and brought us a bottle. With calls of "Just take it!", we ran to the car and back home.
By now, Oreo was out in the back yard with the rest of the family. She didn't look too sick yet, but I knew we had to hurry. We actually poured a long stream into her open mouth and waited. Nothing... Not yet... Nope... NOW WHAT?
One of the kids suggested to put her on the trampoline in the backyard. I helped lift her up there and told the kids to start jumping! It only took a minute or two for the Rimidyl to make a reappearance! I was never so happy to see $64 worth of pills again!
Well, tonight, I don't hear any bangs, hisses or loud booms! There are no zigzags of lightning flying across the sky and we did not have lasagna for supper tonight! Thank goodness for that! I embrace the quiet of the evening and find myself thankful for no loud noises! Sweet Ranger would agree! Good night all!
