Day 511

It would seem that cards are becoming a thing of the past. With the cost of mailing a letter, the other expense of purchasing a card and a new generation of texters, missives in the mailbox are few and far between.

For me, that is simply the impetus to bring this wonderful tradition back to life. Perhaps, when someone receives a card from me, they will feel the urge to honor someone else with a card. Card sending might become popular once again! I, however, am not holding my breath.

As a child, there were numerous pen pals, notes to classmates and the intrepid chain letters! As a teen, the notes were still present, but cards were placed in front of me, by my mom, for a quick signature. Sliding into adulthood, cards and letters became more precious. When-long distance phone calls were costly and emails, texts and FaceTime still a thing of the future, receiving an item in the mail was a precious gift. Someone had taken the time and effort yo make me feel special! I miss those days...

I have a Treasure Box (or two or three) where I tuck all of my most beloved cards and keepsakes. When there is a need to escape the world for a bit, I find a quiet place, open the lid and let wonderful memories soothe my soul. For me, cards are not for the recycle bin, they are special gifts to be savored over the years.

When I send cards, they often have a Golden in the front. Even without a return address, the recipient can guess who sent it! No matter if it is a celebration, a wish for better health, a "check-in" on a friend or other occasion, these offerings are sent from the heart.

Even though it may seem antiquated, my hope is that people will still honor the art of sending cards. There is the best possibility that you just might make someone's day with a card...and that is never an "antiquated" endeavor!
