Day 505
When Lilly and I set out for a visit, we never know what lies ahead. Afterwards, she is often exhausted and falls asleep in my lap. For me, that is a gift. Today, we took an unexpected sidetrack on our way to Walker.
Back in my elementary teaching days, our school had the most amazing Community Education Director. Sue was always coming up with incredibly creative and enjoyable activates for our young students! They would sign up in droves after her presentations in each classroom and she followed up with being a cheerleader for every course offered. Present in the hallway after school, she would guide young learners to their class with a hug and a smile.
This wonderful lady, who is loved by many, is fighting a battle which she will ultimately lose. On our way to Walker, we saw Sue get out of her car and head up the stairs into a nearby school. Lilly and I ran over to her for an update on her battle with cancer. With a look of pure acceptance on her face, she shared that her decision was made to stop treatment. She knows she can't beat this horrible disease, so she has chosen to live the rest of her days with dignity and peace. She simply wants to spend her remaining days with her family...especially those grandchildren who have no idea of her struggle.
Now in tears, I asked this special lady how I could help. She smiled and shook her head saying, "Just keep me in your thoughts and prayers." I was now having a bit of trouble speaking, but through the tears, my question was, "What is the exact prayer you would ask for?" Her answer was 'time'.
We all take time for granted, but not this lady. It is the most precious commodity in her world right now. Most of us believe we have so much time and use terms like "someday", "down the road" or "eventually" with abandon. Sue doesn't have that luxury, so she is enjoying every moment. Working, loving her family and living life are her goals for now. Today is her gift. Tomorrow is not promised.
For Sue, please send thoughts, wherever you personally send that love, for "Time". She asks for nothing else. For yourself, enjoy this day. It is a gift not offered to everyone. For myself, I am going to go hug a few loved ones and walk outside to feel the warmth of the sun on my face.
