Day 483
So often, I talk about my Goldens as if they are a unit without unique personalities, gifts or individual characteristics. That is far from the truth. Although they are all golden retrievers, their nature and inner substance differs greatly from one to the other...just like humans.
A "blossoming friend" sent me a video of a young lady delivering her graduation speech. As I listened, and listened again, the inspirational message hit home. Her premise was that we tend to speak in terms of what people do instead of who they really are.
Being guilty of labeling others as a teacher, a work buddy, a fellow grandparent or any other title denoting what they "do," perhaps it is time to dig deeper. Introducing people to others often presents itself in that format, but there just might be an alternative.
What if I introduced people by "who they are" instead of "what they do" when the opportunity arises...
"I would like you to meet Mary...she is a wonderful, giving individual who loves her family without reservation."
"This is my friend, Tom, who cares deeply about others and makes my world more beautiful."
"Meet my friend Olivia who has a heart as big as the world. Making people's lives better through her kindness and caring is a gift "
Being that person who meets someone and struggles to remember names five seconds later, perhaps I would recall people by who they are instead of a title or label.
This young, wise graduate went on to say that there are three things to remember in life.
1. Choose a positive attitude.
2. Treat others with genuine kindness.
3. Appreciate your own unique inner beauty.
My Goldens already embrace those goals. For me, I will try to infiltrate them into my heart. Plus, the next time I introduce you to someone, be ready for a REAL description of your own inner beauty!
