Day 465

This boy is ALL trust and love! Sammy has never had the need to doubt, or mistrust anyone at his young age and I hope it stays that way for a long time!

When do we turn the early pages of life and discover that there are those who might take advantage of a pure spirit? It seems that the first chapter, in that book, holds a smattering of encounters which begin the questioning. Future chapters add to those cautionary tales and, eventually, there is a chance of individuals becoming wary, jaded and disheartened.

In a perfect world, there would only be honesty and trust between all. However, the world is not perfect, so we protect and guide our young to be aware of human frailties. Not everyone they meet will be their friend and mentor, so trusted loved ones must use teachable moments to prepare their Innocents for life. Sadly, it is a necessity for our young to be equipped with strategies to recognize and deal with those who might just have ulterior motives.

That all sounds rather gloomy, but it needn't be. Supplying our children with strategies to fend for themselves can be a very positive experience. With each encounter, they can choose from a bag of tricks their trusted adults have packed especially for them.

*When someone is unkind, respond with kindness.

*When another is untruthful, speak the truth.

*When there is a bully, walk away.

*When someone is friendless, be their friend.

*When someone is unfaithful, move forward with those who are.

*When someone uses unkind words, use the magical phrase, "I am sorry you feel that way."

Of course, each innocent being needs their mentors and cheerleaders close at hand. These trusted caretakers can always step in when needed and also guide their charge to know when mistrusting someone needs broader shoulders to share the burden.

So much to learn on the journey of life. If the lessons are embraced with empathy, guidance and an open heart, the world might become a better place with each small positive step that is taken.
