Day 450

Humbling moments can span a very long continuum of reactions and today was my day!

After walks, Lilly and I started our morning with a visit to Walker. We had a special request to visit a sweet lady who is now basically bed-ridden. We entered her open door and called a greeting as we headed towards her bedroom. Although confused and slightly concerned about her whereabouts, she was happy to see us. She tried to reach for Lilly, but she was too far over in the bed. Suddenly, the biggest smile spread across her face and she said, "She's saying hello to my feet and it feels so friendly!"

Lilly's tail was wagging and it happened to connect with our friend's bare foot that was angled just right. We visited while Lilly continued her friendly connection. I was humbled by the sheer comfort and joy my Golden Girl offered in the most simple of ways.

Next, a young friend came by to read to Ranger. This "almost second grader" had bonded with our big guy when he would read with children in the schools. Ranger also took a liking to the young reader AND her mother, who was employed at the same school. After a raucous reunion, we all settled on the front porch for story time. Our young lady had been working hard on reading and we could tell. Ranger loved every minute! The humble feeling came when the world seemed to disappear except for Ranger and the shining reader on the couch. The bond between reader and dog was endearing. The canine power was magical!

Next, I went to a large retail store to buy a gift for a friend. Running into someone in the store, who I had lost all respect for due to a "dog event," stopped to visit in the aisle. We said our goodbyes and I went to check out. Walking outside, I didn't see my Subaru right away. After a quick search, the same woman appeared and asked me if I had lost my car. I ate a huge slice of humble pie as she insisted on helping me search in the rain. Of course, a large van pulled out and there it was.

Feeling humbled can be such a gift. Today, even when I couldn't find my car, it was illuminating. I learned a bit about myself and the gift others can offer in such a gentle manner...that humble pie was delicious!

Day 100 Walking With Goldens

And so, after the first 100 days of Walking With Goldens, my heart is full.  Reading back over our daily jaunts, these two precious Goldens are making this world a better place.  Thank you to Lilly and Ranger for their gifts of love, compassion and devotion.  Here’s to the next 100 days and beyond!
