Day 39
6/19/22
It just so happens to be Father's Day today! As I walked with my goldens, I found myself "walking" back through time with other dogs who have been loved by the men in my life.
My own dad was absolutely perfect in my eyes. He was a gentle, kind, caring, honest, hard-working man, and loved me beyond measure. I can assure you the feeling was mutual!
When I was about six, my parents brought a little Maltese terrier home to be our first dog. In my memory, she was cute, prissy and DEVOTED to my dad! She put up with the rest of the household, but he was her person. I can't say that I blame her!
Across the street lived Maynard, who was the father of my dear friend and "sister person!" HE WAS SCARY! Bigger than life, gruff, craggy-faced AND softer on the inside than a marshmallow! It took me some time to discover the essence of this man, but the little dog they picked up on a busy highway realized it immediately! Clyde loved his dad and could always be found sitting on his lap in the big chair reserved only for Maynard...and Clyde. Good choice on that dog's part!
My own dear husband has had many dogs in his life, but Ranger seems to think he hung the moon...so do I! Our pup can always be found near Mac's feet or on the couch as they watch a show on television. I always say that if we were both falling off a cliff, Ranger would grab Mac's belt first and then reach for me!
Another beloved father figure was dear Bob. This man, who was my dad's best friend, actually walked me down the aisle to marry Mac. This was a few months after asking him what his intentions were in our relationship so many years ago! When we would arrive on one of our many cherished visits to their home, little Suzie would greet us at the door. After whimpers, circles, kisses and wiggles, she would jump up onto Bob's lap where she was home. Oh, how I miss those visits!
In each case, these men had the kind of hearts that could love these small, needy beasts. They didn't expect anything back, but received love and devotion in return. I was lucky enough to also be one of their small needy beasts and the love they offered me resonates in my heart every day.
The first picture is of my own sweet dad with his dog Vaughn. When we said good-bye to this incredible man, we sent his dog's collar along with him. The second picture is of my father's great-grand-son. Although Asher has three dogs of his own, Ranger seems to feel the need to guard him and protect him. Two "boys", generations apart...but chosen to be loved by such worthy hearts.
Happy Father's Day to all the men out there who have been loved by such beasts!
