Day 348
4/29/23
Spectators come in all shapes, sizes and number of legs! Devoted to their special players or simply interested in the game, the "Watchers" are integral to the sport.
This morning, as I was walking my Goldens, the stands at Goodrich Field began to slowly fill as the chilly fans took their place. Later, as my four Goldens watched from the front of the house, I stood in my warm house and enjoyed their enthusiasm! I marveled at their devotion and commitment to their players, but remembered a few spectator moments of my own.
When I was a bit younger, I loved to be the "player." When I graduated in the early 1970's, girls were not allowed to play varsity sports. I believe I was in 11th grade when the first girls' basketball team was formed. For me, I was too ensconced in the band program to abandon that passion for another. If there had been more choices earlier in my life, it's hard to say what I might have chosen.
I loved playing in the Girl's Athletic Association offerings (I am dating myself here!). There was volleyball, gymnastics, basketball and other opportunities. Being on the taller side, I enjoyed participating...and competed with zest!
As my own children entered school and started athletics, I became an avid spectator! My middle daughter was amazing on the basketball court and could have chosen any sport with success. There were some real nailbiters on the court with her ability to steal the ball from just about anyone.
Katie, my youngest by a minute, chose swimming and cross-country skiing. She found success in the pool and I appreciated the warmth from the humid, hot bleachers. Cross-country skiing...not a fun sport to warmly support!
All of my children enjoyed sports, band and theater. I was proud of each one wherever I sat as a spectator. Now, it is Asher's turn and Nanny is front and center for EVERYTHING he plays!
As we age, and magically turn from player to spectator, a new spirit takes hold. I never find myself regretting my inability to physically join the team on the field, stage or other venue. I have discovered that, as a "Bench Holder," I enjoy the activities even more. Loved ones are out there playing their hearts out and loving every moment. I, on the other hand, am seated and loving every moment as well.
Watching children and grandchildren is a special privilege and event. It is certainly the next best thing to being out there participating as I did in the past...maybe even better. Not only is my head in the game, but my heart is with the loved ones out there as well! Now, if they would only figure out a way for me to see instant replays, I would be satisfied!
