Day 342

4/23/23

Five years ago today, I had the most incredible experience of my life! Our family gathered around as Asher entered the world. It was my privilege to actually be the first human, other than the doctor, to touch my grandson. Little did I know that this little guy would wrap himself around my heart and change my life in ways I could only imagine.

We had a "Kid Party" with his best buddies and a "Grown-up Party" for supper. It was a great day for every human involved...not so much for the Goldens!

Our pups tend to be rather spoiled. We typically arrange our day around the pack and spend most days with them touching our feet. On special occasions, the dogs are required to stay away from the food and activities in the house. They DO NOT approve of this arrangement in the least! They vacillate between barking and pouting with a fair share of LOOKS that could either melt or freeze a heart!

Without words, our pups can communicate with minimal effort. Their eyes let you know exactly what they want. They can make you feel sooooooo guilty!

Sometimes, I think compare them to humans and their endless stream of words. There are times when the message is meaningful and succinct. Other times, the words can drone on without much meaning. In both instances, the listener remains politely attentive.

There are other times when humans need no words. A look, a shake of the head or a roll of the eyes can communicate perfectly. I sometimes wonder where those "looks" originated.

When I was a teacher, I definitely had mastered the "Teacher Look". I could silence a classroom of second graders by scanning the room with "The Look." I was able to pinpoint a recalcitrant child during a lyceum in the gym with a "Laser Teacher Look." The poor victim would feel the heat of my gaze and wither when I added a shake of the head. Poor babies...they knew I loved them, but they still always wanted to please me!

So, the candles have been extinguished, the cake history, the wrapping paper in the garbage, the gifts adored and a certain five-year-old headed to bed. The pups, on the other paw, are in need of attention and love...they will get a plethora of both!
