Day 261
2/1/23
Curiosity should be an eternal goal...just ask my Goldens! They are curious about every little thing they encounter. Since they are so very expressive, using their noses, cocking their heads, enlisting their ears, it is easy to see their passion for anything new.
I am a naturally curious person. I have always loved learning and discovering new truths. Books, nature, people, dogs and so much more pique my curiosity as my senses take it all in. Not only does my brain welcome new ideas, but my heart embraces these experiences in its own way.
Just today, my heart and mind grew as curiosity led the way.
At the Walker Residence, I soaked in demonstrations of kindness and observed the many ways people love each other. Families, spouses, care-takers and friends were there in abundance. The deep learning was that love doesn't have to be visibly returned to these givers. They give anyway.
Being curious about my time allotments with visits also led me to another deep truth. Although I was unable to visit with the majority of people on my list, Lilly and I did seem to bring joy to the ones we were able to encounter. Feeling like we let so many down made me stop and ask myself why I was focusing on what we didn't accomplish instead of what we did. Questioning myself helped me focus on the positive.
I have learned (thanks to my amazing son) that people's hearts can be reached with a simple question or comment. I am always curious about people who are in the service industry, working at a hospital, walking down the street...everywhere I go. I wonder about their lives and if they seem happy and content. When I am with Jimmy, he makes a point of creating a real connection with a stranger. He might offer them a genuine compliment or, using the name on their nametag, inquire about their day. Every time, their expression tells me that their world just got a little brighter. Being gently curious about someone can be a wonderful thing for a person who feels invisible.
My four Goldens are curious about every sound, smell and moving object. They delight me with their inquisitive spirits. Now, if I could just stop them from sharing that excitement through their barking conversation...
Oh well, I am not holding my breath on the barking part! I do encourage the curiosity part! It can nurture optimism, hope and true connections with the world. Go ahead and embrace your curious side. You never know what you might learn!
