Day 210
12/11/22
These two best friends are inseparable! They play, run, chew on each other's ears and crash! They are never more than a paw apart!
Being able to observe this relationship first hand has been such a learning experience for me. When we brought little Sammy home, Gus was still a big, oversized crazy puppy. We watched with baited breath and ready hands as they played during those first few days. We had nothing to fear.
As the weeks sped by, the two pups were allowed more and more freedom. Now, they have permission to head out the doggy door to play in the fenced-in backyard without a referee. They are free to "hang out" by us whenever we are home (which is most of the time) and only get separated when it's time to eat.
Watching this budding friendship bloom over the months was a gift. Being the bigger brother, I thought Gus would overwhelm Sam. I was wrong in that presumption because it was Sam who ran the show. Gus can often be found with a gash from puppy teeth, a stolen toy taken from his "guzzler" (freely shared) or an ear piercing that wasn't for cosmetic beauty.
I found myself asking the question, "Why does Gus put up with the little rascal?" The answer came immediately to my mind and heart. The love and trust he has for his younger brother overshadows any pain, loss or lack of peace he may experience. He absolutely trusts and adores the little guy and he is loved and adored in return.
I also humbly realized that I have more than my share of these Gus/Sam friendships in my life. To trust and love and I share with the amazing people (and Goldens) in my world is beyond treasured. Once again, I am a lucky girl!
