Day 198

11/29/22

Today started out like most Tuesdays with my Goldens...except this day will be one I will never forget.

Ranger and I headed over to see our beloved friends at Walker Residence and we had the best visits! Sharing time with two of our favorites on this day made it wonderful. Our dear harmonica player was in the dining room, but the staff went to get him for our time together. One of the cooks even helped him to our meeting space and delivered a piece of bacon to Ranger. That dog was VERY appreciative!

Before heading over to Mercy Hospital, we stopped by the front desk to check out. Pausing for a moment as the concierge made an announcement, my mind was already fast-forwarding to our next venue. All of sudden, I caught a note of sadness in Doreen's voice as she made a second announcement. She now had my full attention.

She had invited staff to join the Dignity Quilt Ceremony in Memory Care. As she briefly took another call, I noticed staff slowly walking down the hallway towards the locked ward. I gently asked the concierge about the event and she explained with tears in her eyes. When a beloved resident passes, the staff lines the hallways to bid them farewell. She told me I was certainly welcome to join the staff with Ranger. I knew we needed to do that.

Following a host of staff members into Memory Care and then down a hallway, I realized that many members of the care team had already congregated. We joined the ranks and a couple individuals silently came up and touched my big, red dog on the head. Soon, two family members walked through a door and joined the assembly.

Within moments, a gurney was rolled out with the resident covered in the most beautiful quilt. The attendants stopped in the middle of the hallway and a touching ceremony began. Individuals were invited to share memories and prayers were offered. It was beyond touching and meaningful.

The two daughters found their way to Ranger and let their tears drop on his big head. During the ceremony, to my absolute and humble surprise, my big, old Golden walked over to the gurney, turned and stood at attention. His tail didn't wag, he never moved his head...he just guarded this sweet woman as those around her paid homage. There was not a dry eye.

We were honored to spend some time with the family after the ceremony. Ranger posed for pictures and leaned in as they literally dried their tears on his fur.

I have never been so proud of Ranger. I have never been so humbled by a Therapy Dog encounter. This is why we do this work...what an honor to be at the other end of the leash.
