Day 172

11/2/22

Tonight, I am reminded of another great Mickey story! Since I don't have access to his picture at the moment, I am sharing CUTE Sam!

Years ago, when we had Mickey and Rosie the collies, they had the run of the house at night. We would always know they were sleeping next to one of their humans, so hearing them wander in the wee hours was not startling.

On one particular night, I was awakened by a dog sneezing. Thinking nothing of it, I turned over and went back to sleep. Bad mistake!

A couple hours later, I was again awakened by sneezing. This time, I decided to investigate.

(This story DOES have a happy ending!)

Swinging my legs over the side of the bed, I felt for my slippers and felt something cold and wet. Flipping on the light, I discovered blood EVERYWHERE! On my slippers, pooled beside the bed, all over the bedroom furniture...need I say more?

With my heart beating a million beats a minute, I lurched out of bed and ran to check on the children. All four were sound asleep, but their beds and floor were peppered with blood!

Now, the dogs!!! Rosie was fine...and then I found the source. Wagging his tail, as if to say "Good morning," waltzed our Mickey into my arms. He was covered in blood, but seemed happy as a lark!

Off, with the speed of light, we drove to the Emergency Vet! They led him back and closed the door. I was now in full panic mode with tears streaming down my face. One little nudge and Ugly Crying would ensue!

Finally, half a box of tissues later, they came out to report their findings. They had to sedate him and place all 90 pounds of collie on a heavy-duty screen where they proceeded to hose him down! They discovered a nose bleed, cauterized the culprit and deemed him "good as new!"

After I dried my eyes and sniffled a bit more, I told them he had a teeth cleaning at his regular vets in 20 minutes! They left the IV pick in place, hoisted him on a gurney and said take him over...he's already for them!

Our vets were absolutely shocked when we told them his story and that he was out in the car! They decided to carry him in, continue a new IV and do the procedure!

Later, when we gratefully brought him home, I decided there had to be an easier way to give this big guy a bath and teeth cleaning! He would have probably agreed!

As for the house, we hired a company that dealt with messy issues such as this. After cleaning it up, one of the workers said, "Lady, I have done more than a few bad crime scenes, but I have NEVER seen anything like THIS!"

I didn't take that as a compliment or my brush with the Guinness Book of World Records, but I did have a grateful heart for our sweet collie's good luck!!!
